Rwanda : Gakenke District’s electricity supply lags behind

The service for electricity distribution among the people in different parts of Gakenke district is very slow especially due to the insufficient operations of the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) and the poor financial conditions of the district.

Gakenke District’s electricity

Gakenke district is one of the districts in the country which are still behind in distribution of electricity and water in the people where only 2.9 percent of all the population of the district has access to electricity instead of 7-8 percent as it was said before.

With this issue at hand, the retreat that was held in Gako in Bugesera district which was attended by district officials in 2012 demanded that leaders should put much emphasis in this issue for the district to get to at least 10 percent of its population with electricity but this is far from being achieved.

The work to distribute electricity to 5350 families in Gashenyi, Rushashi, Gakenke, Nemba and Kivuruga sectors for the economic year 2012-2013 is in the process but the process is so slow that it might take a long time to be completed especially due to the district’s financial situation.

On the Rwf420million that the district has to pay to EWSA for these operations to be done and people to get electricity, only Rwf270millions have been paid.

James Kansiime the executive secretary of Gakenke district said that about Rwf400 millions that will be received from taxes in this year 2012/2013 will be used in distributing electricity among the people.

The year 2012 ended with trading centers of Janja, Kivuruga, Mugunga and Muyogwe having electricity.
